The Winter Cup 2008/9 was a series of tournaments in 6 age groups among Hungarian youth football teams that ran from November 2008 to April 2009. In total there were 44 teams playing in 6 age groups on 15 weekends with a total of 312 matches which added up to 112 hours of football! Quite impressive, eh?
Buda Juniors are gold medallists once again! The 1997 team won the fourth and final tournament of the series to end up runaway winners ahead of a three-way tie for second place. The team won 3 of the 4 tournaments and came third in the other.
Meanwhile, two draws and a victory on the last matchday weren't enough for the Buda Juniors 2001 team to claim the bronze medal, finishing their campaign on 20 points in fourth place.
A draw and a defeat on their last matchday the week before meant the Buda Juniors 1996 team also could only manage fourth in their group, with the exact same number of points (20). They won 6, drew 2 and lost 6 of their 14 matches and ended up with a goal difference of minus 4.
The 2000s scored a maximum 12 points on the last day to race up the table from bottom to fifth.
The 1998s finished bottom of the table, unfortunately.
Buda Juniors did not enter a team in the 1999 competition

Due to Szent Pál's non-show Buda Juniors played two friendly games against Esztergom and two competition matches vs Nyergesújfalu on the final day of the Winter Cup. Buda Juniors were finally able to field a very strong team, who could easily have finished in the top three had they been together for all the matchdays.
vs Esztergom (friendly)
won 3-0
Bence
The opening game was decided by Bence's fine strike after taking Lewis' throw in and turning the defender. Overall they played some fine football and gave themselves confidence going into the important games.
vs Nyergesújfalu
won 9-0
Bence (4), Maxime (2), Leo, Alfie (2)
A fantastic all-round display full of excellent attacking football gave Nyergesújfalu no chance in the boys' stongest display of the tournament. The tempo never dropped from the opening whistle and Bence opened the scoring after Maxime's good dribble from Leonard's pass created the opportunity. Maxime then fed Lewis, who was tackled, but Bence was on hand to finish from close range. Lewis volleyed over before Maxime got his first of the day, turning the last defender and finishing neatly at the near post. Lewis then put Maxime through for his second as he sped clear and slipped the ball through the keeper's legs.
The pressure was relentless and Bence made it 5 after Alfie's shot was blocked. Defensively Max and Viktor in goal were superb and the workrate of the whole team to help them was fantastic to see. Lewis thought he was grabbing the 6th goal but was fouled from behind. The ref played a good advantage as the ball ran to Bence who banged in his fourth of the game! Maxime's flick allowed Leo to bury the 7th to the corner and next Alfie dribbled past three defenders before finding the corner with a great strike. Alfie completed the scoring from Maxime's corner after his first attempt was saved, leaving the score 9-0 at the final whistle!
vs Esztergom (friendly)
won 4-0
Bence, Leonard, Maxime (2)
The goals contnued to flow in the second "friendly" game, as the boys continued with much the same effort as the previous game. Bence opened the scoring after turning well past a defender and blasting a shot which the keeper couldn't keep out. Lewis' quick throw found Maxime who dribbled clear before crossing to Leonard who took a touch before placing the ball low to the corner. Max's long clearance created the third as Maxime raced onto it, turned inside two players and tucked the ball inside the the near post for a well taken goal. Maxime grabbed the final goal after winning possession and blasting the ball into the roof of the net.
vs Nyergesújfalu
won 5-0
Leonard (2), Maxime (2), Bence
The final game of the Winter Cup was another great performance as the boys completed 4 wins on the day without conceding a goal... and scoring 19 in the process! Maxime created the first with a great run and cross which Leonard finished well first time on the run. Victor's clearance allowed Maxime to use his pace again and he flicked the ball clear and volleyed home for the second. Alfie set up Bence on the right and he fired a fantastic shot into the far top corner for his 7th goal of the day. He then created Maxime's 6th of the day with a good pass which Maxime tucked away at the near post. Lewis' long throw allowed Leonard to grab the fifth and final goal as he tapped in at the back post to complete a wonderful day's football.
So, the maximum 12 points from the final matchday sent Buda Juniors screaming up the table into fifth place.

One point from four matches on the final matchday wasn't enough to raise us off the bottom of the table with a final goal difference of minus 35 and just six points from a possible 42. Top-of-the-table Dorogi SC, by contrast, only dropped four points in the whole series of matchdays.

Due to a missing email, we didn't know about the matches, so both our opponents were handed 3-0 victories. With one matchday left, we find ourselves bottom of the table, but there are four matches so we have the chance to move up...

1997 age group

Group matches   vs Pilisszentiván SE
won 6-0
Alex Hurley (2), Alex Hingl, Matthew, Christian, Anton
We started the game very slowly, our players being too comfortable knowing that we had won the competition already. It took a good 5 minutes to start our engine up properly, but from there on in we didn't stop until we reached 6. Some good passing and nicely formed action, as well as Alex Hingl's beautiful goal, gave us a very, very comfortable victory.
  vs Pilisvörösvár L. SE
won 2-0
Till, Barna
A slow start again, but good football in the end against a much stronger team than in our first match. Till scored our first goal after a good combination and not long after Barna ensured a confident victory. A clean sheet, but a few mistakes in defence... Winning against Pilisvörösvár put us top of the group.
Semi-final vs Diófa-Tát SE
won 1-0
Alex Hurley
A difficult match. Tát hit the post twice before we could answer them with a goal. It needed all of our power to defend and from not many chances we were able to score a winner.
Final vs Solymár
won 3-2
Matthew (2), Anton
Solymár pushed from the very first minute but could not stop Matthew this time. Quick goals from Matt one after each other made it 2-0 to us. It looked like our team slowed down too much after the second goal and we soon had to pay for it. Solymar kept pushing for an equaliser, but Barna in defence and Jelle in goal stopped them. We broke and Anton scored a stunning goal to bring the score to 3-1. Two minutes before the end Solymár came back into the game, but could not turn the match around thanks to our solid defence.
Our Group 4 players from 1997 entered this year's Winter Cup as defending champions and succeeded in defending their title, collecting another Gold medal. A very good overall performance through the whole Winter Cup. This group showed individual skills as much as being a good team....

2001 age group

vs Szent Pál A. FC
drew 1-1
Bence
A sleepy start. All of our little players a looked little bit nervous, which unfortunately showed in our defence so Szent Pál A. FC went up 1-0. We woke up and tried our best to turn the game around but Bence's goal was only enough to draw.
vs Tabáni Spartacus
drew 0-0
It doesn't happen very often in this age group that a match ends up 0-0. Strong defences on both sides meant the strikers didn't have many chances in front of the goals. All of our players worked hard against one of the best teams in the competition and with a little bit of luck in the end we could have won the match. A good match anyway, with a good result.
vs Szent Pál A. FC
won 3-1
Bence (2), Sam
Not long after our first meeting with Szent Pál A. FC we were facing them again. The performance of the day! Bence scored our first goal from a brilliant free-kick. Not long afterwards Sam found the back of the net. Bence's second goal made it 3-0 to us. Szent Pál A. FC scored just before the final whistle after a little misunderstanding in our defence, but it was already job done.
We ended fourth in the group, a long way behind the top two teams but only 2 points behind Tabáni Spartacus - a victory against them on this matchday would have won us the bronze medal. Unlucky, guys!

vs Piliscsaba
drew 2-2
Marcel, Alexis
Despite what looked like a strong side on paper we got off to a very poor start, losing 2 early goals and leaving us a mountain to climb. Firstly Ralph failed to deal with a corner at the near post and Marci could only push the ball into his own net after 2 minutes. A further 2 minutes later another corner wasn't cleared and the Piliscsaba striker volleyed a great shot which Marci pushed onto the post but unfortunately back into the net. However, the boys responded brilliantly and were level by half-time. Alexis created the first, winning the ball well before dribbling down the left and crossing for Marcel to finish. A long ball over the top led to the equaliser as Alexis reacted first and volleyed home into the corner. In the second half we never looked under threat at the back but some wasteful finishing at the other end as Thomas, Alexis and Jasper all shot wide of the near post meant the scores stayed level at the final whistle.
vs Dorogi SC
lost 0-4
A 4-nil scoreline was maybe a little harsh on the boys, as they played very well against the runaway tournament leaders and bearing in mind the previous game resulted in a 9-1 thrashing they can be proud of their performance. A bad start once again left us chasing shadows and the first two goals came from losing possession inside our own half. Victor could do little about the first as the striker burst through Ralph and Alex and finished well. The second was a lucky volley that looped in from the sideline and the third goal before half-time was very poor as they were given a free header from a throw-in to nod home. The second half was much better, but Dorog added a fourth when Simon missed a tackle in the middle and the striker made no mistake, burying the ball past Marci into the corner.

Saturday 7th March 2009

1996 age group

vs Piliscsaba
drew 2-2
Christian, Matthew
We started the match a little bit too slowly, taking a while to start functioning like a team. Not long after the kick-off Piliscsaba found the way to our net, but even though our players just couldn't pick up the pace Christian scored after some great passing. Not long afterwards a long-range free-kick put Piliscsaba ahead at half-time. Second half, different story. We looked like a different team and kept pushing for a goal which came 5 minutes into the second half from Matthew. We pushed and pushed and had some good chances, but had to accept that Piliscsaba's goalie denied all of our efforts.
vs AS Romái
lost 1-4
Sam
We faced this game knowing that if we won or drew we would end up 3rd in this age group. Unfortunately it looked like we couldn't handle the situation well and soon after the start of the match Romai were 2-0 up. Sam scored from a free-kick, but we just could not turn the game to our favour and the third goal came from AS Romai after a free-kick. We tried hard in the last 10 minutes but could not score and because we left space at the back AS Romai scored again to make it 4-1.

Defeat to AS Romái in our very last match of the Cup meant that they pipped us to third place on goal difference (they have plus 3, we have minus 4), with both teams ending up on 20 points from 14 matches (6 wins, 2 draws, 6 defeats). Szent Pál AFC finished extremely worthy winners, having won 13 of their matches!

2001 age group

vs Nyergesújfalu
won 3-1
Bence (2), Luki
Our youngest age group taking part in the Winter Cup was on show in the afternoon and looked like they really wanted to put on a show. Discipline in all situations, working very well as a unit - they made us all proud. Bence scored our first goal after a nice combination. Nyergesújfalu's answer came not long after, but we didn't panic. Luki's enthusiastic participation in our attacking game gave us the lead again. Bence's second and our third goal was a very good finish to this far from easy, but very well performed match.
vs Tabáni Spartacus
won 3-1
Luki, Bence (2)
The last time we met Tabán we couldn't win, so here we had the chance for "revenge". Luki continued his great performance and scored our first goal. It was great to see that all of our players wanted to play football, were searching for opportunities to pass the ball to each other and to try to follow the coaching instructions. With Bence's free-kick we were already 2-0 up when a little mistake in defence gave Tabán some hope to come back into the game, but Bence soon made sure that Buda Juniors walked away with another great victory.

1997 age group

Group matches   vs Pilisszentiván SE
won 5-1
Alex Hurley, Till (2), George, Christian
After finishing third last time out, our 97 boys had something to prove and looked very strong from the opening minute. Till set up Hurley but the keeper's legs foiled him and from the resulting throw the same player headed just over. George set up Hurley again with a clever pass but once more he was thwarted by the keeper's legs. Eventually Hurley found the way through as he collected Till's throw and shot hard and low under the goalkeeper. Till poked home the second after controlling George's through ball. The third was all George's making as he beat two men and finished calmly into the corner. At the back we were very comfortable but an unfortunate slip by Jelle as he tried to clear left the goal gaping for the striker to place home. Till sparked into life again, smashing a great shot off the angle before takiing Christian's pass in his stride and slotting home. Christian added a fifth before the end when he blocked down a clearance and the ball ricocheted past the bemused goalkeeper into the net!
  vs Esztergom SC
won 4-0
Matthew, Till, Jordan, George
A great start in this second game put us two goals to the good within the first three minutes. George's dribble and driven cross was beautifully turned home by Matthew's right foot in the opening seconds. He almost scored a second, shooting just wide after a neat turn. Stand-in goalie Hurley then sent Till racing onto a long ball and he lifted it over the advancing keeper for a lovely goal. Hingl made two crucial interceptions to keep the two-goal cushion intact and at the other end his right-foot cross was nearly turned in by Till's clever back flick but the keeper somehow deflected it for a corner. Hingl then set up Christian and Jordan but neither player could find the net. Jordan did get his deserved goal, chasing down Kostya's ball and burying his shot into the corner. Jordan tuned provider for the final goal, rolling the ball for George to smash home into the same spot to leave the final score 4-0.
Semi-final vs Pilisvörösvár L. SE
won 3-1
Alex Hurley (2), own goal
Fresh from his clean sheet between the sticks, Hurley showed what he can do at the other end, scoring twice in the opening minutes. First he intercepted a loose pass, rounded the last defender, and blasted home for a great individual goal. The second goal was all about Barna, as he broke clear from his own goal-line and sprinted past two defenders on the left touchline. At full tilt his left-foot cross was perfect and Hurley arrived on cue to apply the finish to a wonderful counter attack! The best football of the day almost produced a memorable goal as Jelle played the ball to Hurley's feet. His flick inside found Barna who played one touch into the space for Hurley. Without breaking stride his first time cross was turned just wide by Till but the move showed just what the boys are capable of producing. George set up Matthew and Hingl, but both players hesitated and the chance was gone. A fortunate own goal put us 3 up through a badly sliced clearance, but there was still time to concede a silly goal as Christian was left facing two attackers and just failed to intercept, leaving the second striker an empty net to finish.
Final vs Diófa-Tát SE
drew 1-1 (won 2-1 on penalties)
Matthew, Till, Jordan, George
A much tougher game forced our boys to really battle for the first time in the day. We dominated the game, but a combination of poor finishing, great goalkeeping and a lack of composure left the game deadlocked at full time. Till had the first real chance after he, George and Christian had been denied by good tackles, but his shot hit the post and rebounded clear. Twice more he was denied by the keeper while at the other end Barna and Jelle had to be alert to snuff out any danger. A good shout from Hurley allowed George to lift a high ball over his and the defenders' heads. Hurley's touch was perfect and he accelerated away before finishing to the corner for a great goal. Matthew, George and Hingl all had efforts saved while Kostya and Barna kept things tight at the back. Without the cushion of a second a breakaway goal was always a threat and it duly arrived as Barna was left two on one and Jelle just couldn't get to the strikers feet to stop the shot from finding our net.

And so to penalties... Tat's opening effort rebounded clear off the post. Hurley stepped up, placing the ball to the keeper's left, but again the ball struck the inside of the post and failed to cross the line. Tat's goalscorer then fired home to leave Hingl under pressure but he buried his low to the left with great confidence. Tat's third taker dragged his shot wide, leaving Till to slot home for victory and he made no mistake, sending his side footer into the right corner.

2000 age group

vs Esztergom SC
drew 0-0
The 2000s had a tough day, losing two out of three games without registering a goal. The first gave us a battling draw against a good Esztergom side. Victor made three good stops and at the other end Lewis had two efforts flash wide. The fighting and spirit was great to see but very little constructive football was played...
vs II.ker UFC
lost 0-4
Despite the scoreline we put in a much better performance against the strongest team in the league. Bence went close, volleying onto the post from distance. Victor made two good stops but could do nothing about the opener as two missed tackles left the striker in lots of space to pick his spot. Sam set up Bence who shot wide and Alfie fashioned a chance for himself with a good dribble but his effort was saved. On the break the greens scored a second as Victor parried well but could do nothing about the rebound and seconds later Max and Sam were left chasing after a clever one-two and the striker blasted home the third. Sam almost turned in Bence's corner but right at the end we conceded a fourth after failing to deal with a long throw.
vs Tabáni Spartacus
lost 0-3
Again a disappointing result, but a much improved performance. We dominated the game right until the opening goal, with Lewis and Bence coming closest. A breakaway from our own corner left Max exposed and Victor couldn't prevent the low shot squeezing home. Bence responded with a good shot which was saved while only a great tackle denied Alfie after a strong run. The second and third goals arrived within seconds of each other firstly from a counter attack and then after sloppily losing the ball from the kick-off.
The boys fought hard all day and certainly deserved to score a couple of goal but hopefully some of the same boys wil have more luck with the 2001's next week!

1996 age group
Saturday 7th February 2009

vs Esztergom SC
lost 1-2
Kevin
Looking half asleep and like they had never seen each other before, our boys got off to a disastrous start against a very weak Esztergom side. In truth we still should have won the game, despite ourselves, but it just wasn't a good enough performance to earn a bit of luck finding the back of the net a few more times. Lars, George, Christian (twice) and Matthew came close to an opener but a lack of composure meant the finishing was poor. Matthew came closest, racing onto George's pass but smashing the ball against the near post. Kevin's left foot proved an unlikely source to break the deadlock but what a goal it was! Linking up with Lars he controlled the ball 15 metres out before smashing a cracking volley into the far top corner! Surely the floodgates would open now... not so!

Within 5 minutes we were two-one down as some sloppy defending from a free-kick left two free red shirts to finish easily and then a deflection landed the ball at the striker's feet and he made no mistake again, slipping the ball past an exposed Glenn. Marcell, Christian, George and Lars all tested the keeper but in truth we never really looked like grabbing an equaliser and went down to a very dissappointing defeat.
vs Diófa-Tát SE
won 3-0
Christian (2), Kevin
Despite a nervous start, where Glenn had to be alert to keep out Matthew's wayward clearance, we won this one easily. George headed over before creating the opener. He slipped in Kevin, who bravely got there ahead of the keeper to square for Christian to tap in for a great goal. Christian then rattled the bar before finding the net moments later for the second time. George dribbled past two and then dummied to shoot, sending the last defender and keeper sprawling before rolling the ball right to Christian who found the empty net. Marcell then had two efforts saved before Glenn was called into action, making two good saves, while Lars tracked backed brilliantly to stop a certain goal chance. Sam shot just wide of the near post before the killer third goal arrived. George was the architect, beating two men on the touchline and just as the keeper came to close him down he pulled the ball back for Kevin to slam home! It should have been four at the death but Christian greedily went for goal from an impossible angle, hitting the post when George and Kevin were waiting for the cross. Special praise for Jelle at the back who was strong and composed throughout, allowing the other boys to do the business at the other end of the field.
vs MAC-Népstadion
won 3-2
Marcell, George, Lars
Jelle damaged his ankle just before kick off, so George stepped in at the back in a very cagey game where chances never really arrived in the first ten minutes. When Jelle was able to come on, George could push forward and the move paid off as he set Marcell free, who controlled and buried his finish into the bottom corner. Marcell and George combined to set Matthew free, but his effort came back off the post before moments later Matthew's pass rolled agonisingly between George and Marcell with the goal gaping! George got his deserved goal, cleverly slipping the ball past a very poorly placed wall and into the near corner. Jelle undid some of his good work by losing the ball as last man and despite Glenn and Sam's great efforts the ball was forced over the line. This spelled a crazy couple of minutes as we panicked a little defensively, but Lars broke free down the right and sent a looping cross-shot over the keeper and in to put the game out of reach. Just as well, as with the last action Glenn parried a long-range effort which was put away to leave the final score a thrilling 3-2!!! This leaves our boys in third place going into their final two games with second place still a possibility.

vs Szent Pál AFC
lost 2-5
Till, Alex
A disappointing result, but more importantly a disappointing performance. Seven minutes into the game we were already 3-0 down. All the goals came from us giving the ball away and letting Szent Pál face one defender with three attackers. This happened three times and knowing that we had talked about not doing this made it even worse. After half-time we produced one great moment of football and Till scored. Not long after, unfortunately, we made the same mistake again and went behind by three goals again. After this, Szent Pál just tried not to let in more goals. Alex scored our second, but Szent Pál were still able to reply, so we finished 2-5.
vs Pilisvörösvár L. SE
won 3-2
Alex (2), Fabrizio
A better start than the first match and Alex scored a quick goal. Pilisvörösvár's answer came quickly, but Fabrizio's goal gave us the lead again. Pilisvörösvár pushed hard, and a little mistake in defence presented them with their second goal. However, Alex scored our winner not long before the end of the match.
vs Szent Pál AFC
lost 1-2
Lars
The second match against Szent Pál was much better then the first one, but we still couldn't produce enough to win it. We had more chances to score, but we still had problems at the back.
vs Pilisvörösvár L. SE
lost 1-2
Till
This match should have ended like the first one, but we gave goals away again far too easily.

1998 age group

vs Esztergom SC
lost 1-5
Alexis
Missing a number of regulars and forced to call some younger players into the squad, it was always going to be a difficult day for our boys. However, we started brightly, despite Marci being forced into an early save. Simon shot wide and Alexis had a great effort saved while Fulop sent 2 free kicks just over. After 5 minutes we went behind to a soft goal as Esztergom were left with lots of space on the left and when the ball was crossed their striker was left unmarked for a simple tap-in. Our lack of experience showed as some players panicked and within seconds we were 3 down as Marci gave a poor kick out which was punished and then he was unlucky as his brave stop bounced fortunately for a red shirt to finish.

Alexis moved into midfield and took contol of the game, firing in numerous shots, one of which found the bottom corner for a deserved goal. As we pushed forward late on, Esztergom hit us on the break. Despite Marcell's best efforts 3 became 4 and right at the death we conceded again, this time a free header from a throw-in to leave the final score 5-1... not a true reflection of how the boys played!
vs Diófa-Tát SE
lost 0-2
Despite some encouraging aspects of the opening game the scoreline obviously affected the boys, who never got going in this match. Alexis again led the side well in midfield but chances were harder to come by and defensively we seemed a little afraid after the first match, missing several soft tackles throughout the team. Only Jasper fought bravely from the beginning and played some very clever football when in possesion. The first goal arrived after 9 minutes as a long ball from the keeper bounced over Marcell and Simon, leaving the striker free to volley in off the post. Soon after it was two as Marci failed to collect a deflected shot and the rebound was put away. The boys woke up a little after this but never really threatened going forward.
 vs Hegyvidék SE
lost 2-4
Fulop, Alexis
A much improved performance, but again defensive frailties cost us a victory. Simon found Alexis whose through ball was beautifully controlled and finished left-footed by Fulop. Again missed tackles led to an equaliser as Marci and Marcell on the line couldn't stop the shot at the second attempt. Simon then had two oppertunities as he won the ball in midfield, but had his shot saved and then after Alexis' great pass he slipped the ball just wide of both the onrushing keeper and the post! A long ball over the top again cost us as Marci was just pipped to the ball and it rolled into the unguarded net and all of a sudden we were 2-1 down. Alexis quickly replied, burying a volley past the keeper after Marcell had found Jasper who crossed from the right.

Straight away a speculative shot from the right somehow squirmed past Marci and we were a goal behind again. And right from the kickoff the same player scored again, this time with a cracking shot in off the post, to leave us 2 down with two minutes to play! The boys didn't give up and managed to put together the move of the day as Fulop fed Simon who dribbled past one defender before passing to Alexis. His first-time cross was met by the oncoming Jasper but the goalkeeper saved brilliantly to deny our boys a consolation goal.
So 3 games and 3 defeats, but a lot of lessons learned for the future to take back to training, especially for our Group 3 boys Jasper, Martin, Henrik and Alexis.

2001 age group

vs II.ker UFC
lost 1-3
Matthew
Missing some of our players from the squad (flu, etc) we gave the chance to some of our younger boys (2002) to show their skills and have their very first match experience with Buda Juniors. We have to say that those who had already played and all the new boys really tried their best and worked hard. II.ker had the advantage of having their complete team and were able to win this match even after Matthew scored first. Vencel needed to get used to being in goal (this was his first time) and in the process II.ker players found the net 3 times.
vs Diófa-Tát SE
lost 0-2
A good match, with the improvement already visible. We created chances, but unfortunately missed them and two misunderstanding sin defence lead to another defeat. Our team worked hard again and we were very pleased with the attitude of every single Buda Juniors player.
vs Hegyvidék SE
lost 1-2
Sam
The most difficult team to play against, but our best performance on this Saturday. Hard work, great performance and with a little bit of more luck in front of Hegyvidék's goal we could have got an even better result. Vencel played his second match as goalie and played very well. Sam and Luki led the team, setting a very good example for our young ones Lucas, Liam and Maxime.

Group matches   vs Solymár
drew 3-3
Alex Hurley (2), Till
A rematch of the first Matchday's final saw the spoils shared in an end-to-end encounter. Matthew had the first shot of the match but it was pushed out for a corner. Some lovely play between Hurley and Till allowed Hurley to open the scoring with a well-taken finish. Seconds later it was 1-1 as Solymar broke quickly and the big striker toe-poked home past the onrushing Christian. Hurley then repaid Till's earlier pass with a lovely ball which Till calmy slotted home. Matthew's next effort grazed the crossbar, but it was Hurley's left foot which grabbed the third goal as he dummied beatifully before firing a great shot into the near corner. Some slack marking was punished as we were pegged back again right at the death as Jelle lost his man on the left and the cross left the striker with an easy tap in from close range.
vs Diófa-Tát SE
won 3-1
Alex Hurley, Till (2)
Knowing only a victory would guarantee a semi-final spot the boys started like a house on fire. Christian's long ball was trapped beautifully by Matthew who lifted the ball over the keeper only for a fantastic piece of defending to somehow clear the ball from under the cross bar! Hurley then looped a header off the upright and as Till pounced on the rebound it had goal written all over it but this time the ball crashed back off the other post!!! Incredibly we found ourselves behind as a soft free kick managed to trickle past everone including Christian and into the corner of the net! Hurley then raised his game with a fantastic dribble from his own area, rounding the keeper and finishing from a tight angle for the equaliser. He then set Till up to shoot and although it wasn't a clean strike it found its target and suddenly we were ahead. Hurley again played a part in the third as he drew two defenders and waited for the perfect moment to square for Till who calmly controlled and bent the ball into the far corner. Matthew then had a shot saved before Anton nearly made it four but his effort came back off the post.
Semi-final vs Pilisvörösvár L. SE
drew 2-2 (lost 1-3 pens)
Till, Alex Hurley
Ultimately a dissapointing way to lose any game, but the boys battled very well against a much improved team and were only seconds away from victory. Christian swopped places with Jelle, who took over in goal, and fired just over in the opening moments. Till then rounded the keeper only to be beaten by the tightness of the angle and his next effort was well saved. Pilisvorosvar looked dangerous on the counter attack and as the striker was played through Jelle came out well to save, but unfortunately the ball bounced up off Matthew's chest and in off the post. Hurley responded with a shot deflected for a corner which he drove in low and hard and Till managed to poke it home from close in.

Some great one-touch football between Matthew and Hurley allowed the latter to break clear and slip a fine finish under the goalie to put us seemingly into the final. However, there was one more twist as some awful marking from a long ball forced Jelle to rush from his goal. Despite blocking the initial effort the rebound was put away with the final kick of the match to leave the scores level at 2-2! Jelle could do nothing to stop 3 very good penalties and with Christian's attempt blocked and Hurley scoring, we were left to play for third place for the first time at the Winter Cup.
3rd-4th play-off vs Solymár
won 4-1
Till, Alex Hurley (3)
The boys made sure they stayed on top of the standings with a solid performance and a very good response to going out on penalties. Jelle's long throw set Till free for the first as he slipped the ball through the keeper's legs. Hurley played a fine one-two with Till and finished well after taking the return on his chest. With Alex and Christian defending much better and Jelle solid when called upon, Hurley and Till had much more joy going forward. Hurley made it 3 with a clever turn and finish after good pressure by Anton. Christian then got too close to the striker from a throw-in and he raced clear, finishing well by lifting the ball over the stranded Jelle. However, Matthew put the game to bed by robbing the last defender of the ball and driving forward at the keeper, allowing Hurley who was following up to grab his hat-trick with a blasted finish.
Despite missing four "regulars" the boys showed great spirit and character to finish the day in third place and stay top of the league overall. Hopefully next time will see a better defensive display and another trip to the final!

vs Pilisvörösvár L. SE
lost 0-7
Pilisvörösvár were just a little bit too much to handle. We missed some players for various reasons and as most of our players come only once a week we can't say that our team members know each other very well. However, all of our players tried their best.
vs Diófa-Tát SE
lost 1-2
Simeon
A much better game for us. We missed a few good chances, but unfortunately Piliscsaba had more luck scoring. Simeon and Thibault in front and Sam played really well, and with a little more luck we could have got at least a draw.

vs AS Romái
drew 1-1
Alex Hurley
The second matchday brought two solid if unspectacular displays from our 96's. From the off we certainly dominated the chances with Lars slipping in Hurley, who delayed a little too long and his shot was blocked. Glenn tipped a long-range free-kick onto the bar before George, Hurley and Till all had efforts saved. Glenn did well again coming out of his area as AS Romai threatened on the break. Hurley nearly broke the deadlock with a great free-kick but the ball fizzed just wide as half-time came.

The second period was once again Buda Juniors pressure but without the cutting edge as Till had two efforts saved before hitting the bar and post within a minute! Glenn then undid his good work by conceding a soft goal from a throw-in as the ball bounced high in the box, nobody challenged and the AS Romai striker headed home. However, we weren't behind for long as George set up Hurley, who placed the ball past the onrushing keeper to equalise. Hurley then had an almost identical chance but this time the keeper came out on top and with nearly the last kick Kevin almost won it as his low shot went under the goalie but a defender got back to somehow clear off the line to leave the scoreline at one-a-piece!
vs Piliscsaba
won 5-3
Sam, Alex Hurley (2), Marcell, Till
Sam began his personal dual with the opposition goalkeeper right from the kick-off as he fired a shot against the bar and followed it up in the first 5 minutes with 3 more which were saved and another which cannoned off the angle! In between he also set up George, but the header went just over. Not to be denied, Sam was first to react as George's corner wasn't cleared and he finished from close range. From there on in the goals should have flowed but instead we were 2-1 down within a minute as a clearance over the top was flicked past Glenn for the equaliser and seconds later Patrick couldn't prevent a cross from the left which Glenn spilled and, despite Lars blocking one effort, the ball was eventually put away. Lars and Till came close before a great dribble by Lars, rounding two defenders and drawing the keeper, allowing Hurley to scramble the ball over the line. Again we shot ourselves in the foot, as some poor defending allowed a shot to squeeze through a crowd of legs and past an unsighted Glenn to leave us trailing at the break.

The second half was again all Buda Juniors, but just as it seemed like it wasn't going to be our day, Hurley swung a left-foot shot which took a wicked deflection and somehow found the corner of the net! All credit to the boys for not letting their heads drop and suddenly the little bit of luck that hadn't gone their way in the first match was repaid in spades. Marcell put us ahead with a weak shot which the goalie somehow let squirm through his hands and it was game ove moments later as Till's ambitious effort was again deflected past the distraught Piliscsaba keeper! A well deserved if somewhat fortunate victory leaves us in a nice position ahead of the next matchday when we will play the top 2 sides twice in one day!

vs Esztergom
lost 0-3
The 96s got their Winter Cup campaign off to a nervous and disjointed start, going down to a very good Esztergom side. One down by the break, the second half was a slightly improvement with George, Lars and Hurley all having chances to equalise. In the last couple of minutes we conceded two more to leave the boys with much to think about before the next match.
vs Diófa-Tát SE
won 2-1
George, Marcell
The day looked like going from bad to worse as 23 of the 24 minutes had elapsed before we finally found the back of the net and somehow snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with the last kick of the game! We started brightly, with Till and George haviing shots saved. A breakaway goal from our own throw-in left Glenn with no chance facing the attackers. Marcell then spurned two opportunities, firing a rebound wide with the goal gaping and then foiled by some good goalkeeping after being fed by George. Hurley then headed over and had a free-kick saved before half-time. The second half was more of the same, with Buda Juniors pressing for a goal but lacking the finish. However, the boys showed great character to keep going till the end and were rewarded when the referee adjuged the Tát goalkeeper to have fouled Hurley and pointed to the spot. George stepped up and blasted his shot home. The drama wasn't over, as Tát were stung into a last attack. George cleared to Marcell who played in Fabrizio down the right. He took the ball to the goal-line before crossing and Marcell was on hand to bury the winner with the last kick of the match!!!
vs MAC-Népstadion
won 2-0
Fabrizio, Lars
On a high from the thrilling finish against Tát, the boys started confidently against a very strong MAC side. George was at the heart of everything. His free-kick was well saved and next he set up Fabrizio, who was also foiled by a good stop. Patrick's long ball found George again but this time he shot wide. Marcell and Fabrizio then combined well, but a last-ditch tackle put the ball behind for a corner. All four outfield players then combined for a wonderful opener. Patrick won the ball and passed to George who found Marcell on the left. His left foot cross was perfect and Fabrizio arrived on cue to finish at the back post. Glenn was called into action and some good defending and goalkeeping kept us ahead at half-time. MAC really came out fighting after the break, but our boys stood firm, with Patrick in particular putting in a great display at the back. As MAC pushed forward we looked dangerous on the break and a quick throw-in found its way to Lars who bravely looped his header over the onrushing keeper and in for a deserved goal. Lars was at the other end moments later to clear from his own line and keep the two-goal cushion. Hurley could have sealed the victory but after rounding the keeper beautifully he rushed his shot wide! All the boys played exceptionally well in the final game and showed that they can compete with any of the teams in their group in the future match days.

The worst experience ever!!! Our players were not on the field. NO confidence, no teamplay, no courage. It would be best if we just forget the result, and focus on the work and how we can improve with this age group...
vs Piliscsaba

Better performance, but you could still see the first match's effect on most of our players. The team play got better, and with a little bit of concentration we could have scored more goals.

Bence
Good match overall, even though we gave a 15-minute headstart to Tabán. The first half was a little bit too slow from our side. We had a few chances, but 2-0 was a fair half-time score. After the break our team came "alive" and played very well. We really tried our best to score and our efforts paid off when Bence managed a goal. He then hit the cross bar and Tom was just inches too late facing an open goal. Several more chances came, but unfortunately we missed them so we had to finish on the losing side. No complaints, though, as all of our players did a great job...
vs Nyergesújfalu
won 4-0
Lewis, Bence, Luky, Tom
Great performance!!! Good passing and strong team spirit... Our team gave no chance at all to Nyergesújfalu. It was good to see that all of the players tried to do what we had talked about and we could see the improvement in passing, compared to the first matchday.

vs Esztergom SC
drew 2-2
Fülöp, own goal
We started the match a little nervously "as normal", but were able to hold strong at the back. Even though Esztergom started better and scored the first goal, our players matched them. Fülöp scored and equalized not long before half-time. In the second half one mistake at the back and we were one goal down again. The team play was still missing, but we pushed better for the second goal and it came finally, thanks to one of the Esztergom defenders scoring for us.
vs Diófa-Tát SE
lost 0-3
Unfortunately we started really slowly and went a goal down very quickly. Led by Ralph and Alex we pushed well, but another goal set us back 2-0 before half-time. A much better second half, and with a little bit more luck we would have come closer to Diófa-Tát, but another mistake and we lost the match 3-0.
 vs Hegyvidék SE
lost 1-4
Everybody thought that we had the best chance against Hegyvidék. It looked like that after 2 minutes as Marcel scored and we took the lead. Unfortunately, this one goal made us too comfortable and within 7 minutes we were 3 goals down. The second half brought no change to the score and even though we had some chances we could not score and come back into the game.

vs II.ker UFC

Bence
We started our first match really well, the very first one for some of our players in Buda Juniors. 1-0 by half-time and good work from our players. In the second half there weren't any real chances for us to score, but strong defence (Sam, Beerend) made sure that there weren't any chances in front of our goal either.
vs Diófa-Tát SE
won 4-1
Lewis, Bence (3)
An early goal from Lewis gave confidence to our players and even after Diófa-Tát scored we were able to take the lead very quickly thanks to better team-play and even better individual work. In the second half we gave no chances, controlling the game and a hat-trick from Bence give as a very confident win.
 vs Hegyvidék SE
lost 2-3
Bence (2)
Two mistakes at the back meant we were two goals down at half-time. At the very beginning of the second half Bence scored and brought us back into the game, but another small mistake and we were 3-1 down. Our team didn't stop and pushed hard to try and turn the match around. Bence's freekick made it 3-2 but there was no time left for us to equalise.

vs Esztergom
lost 0-5
For many of our boys this was the first experience of the Winter Cup (or indeed any Cup) and after a very nervous couple of games they came through to end the day on a high and looking forward to the next matchday. With Victor sidelined through illness we used 3 volunteer goalkeepers in the 3 games who all performed very well. First to try was Matthew, who could do nothing to stop the opening goal as an Esztergom corner was met with a great volley into the back of the net. We were 2 down at half-time as a cross shot from the left squeezed inside the near post. However, for the last 3 minutes of the first half and the first 7 of the second we matched a very clever Esztergom team in every department and were very unlucky not to get a goal back, with Bence and Simeon coming closest. A couple of mistakes at the back let in two more goals and in the last minute Matthew's great save wasn't enough to stop the 5th goal but the scoreline was a little harsh to open the tournament.
vs II.ker UFC
lost 0-5
An identical scoreline and almost identical match as one goal from a corner, two from silly mistakes and a shot from the side (plus an own goal!) sent us crashing to another heavy, but undeserved defeat! An unfortunate Sam deflected the ball into his own net after 5 minutes to open the scoring and we were 2 down right on half-time as a shot found its way inside Preston's near post. The second half was once again a great Buda Juniors battle with Tom, Max and Lewis leading the way. Again some basic errors at the back cost us two quick goals and the scoreline read 5 at the end, as a corner found its way to the back post to an unmarked player who made no mistake.
vs Tabáni Spartacus
won 3-1
Bence (3)
A fantastic performance from every player gave us a deserved victory in the final game. Although Bence grabbed the attention with a superb hat-trick, all of the boys played at their peak with Sam, Max and Nate excellent at the back and Tibor, Tom, Preston, Matthew and Simeon battling brilliantly in front of them. Lewis was assured in goal and it was his kick out that found Matthew, who crossed for Bence for the first chance of the game. The effort went for a corner and Matthew's delivery fell nicely for Bence to smash home! Bence added a great second, dribbling down the right before firing into the far top corner to make it two-nil. Sam and Nate were rock solid at the back and Simeon seemed to be everywhere on the pitch, putting in tackles and breaking forward. Bence almost grabbed a first-half hat-trick after taking Tibor's pass but his shot came back off the crossbar!

The second half started badly as a breakaway sent Taban through. Lewis stood his ground and made a great stop but couldn't recover to keep out the follow-up. Bence wasn't to be denied the match ball, however, and quickly replied for Buda Juniors, racing onto Sam's pass and finishing calmly into the near corner. More shots from Matthew, Bence and Preston couldn't add to the scoreline, but the boys showed they will be much better prepared next time when they will play 3 different teams. If they perform to this high standard the results should be much improved... Well done boys! :)

Group matches vs Pilisvörösvár L. SE
won 4-0
Alex Hurley, Jordan, Matthew, George
The Buda Juniors boys continued their fine form from last year's Winter Cup with 4 convincing victories to collect maximum points from the first matchday. Within seconds they had opened the scoring as Till's driven free-kick was controlled by Hurley who rolled his defender and finished inside the near post. Till then dragged an effort wide after a great dribble and followed it up with a stinging volley which the keeper saved. Jordan provided the finish for the second goal after being played through by Matthew. Christian took over between the sticks as Jelle's day was ended early by an ankle injury.

The second half was probably the best 10 minutes of football this age group has played and the scoreline in the end flattered our opponents. Hurley, George and Till had chances in a crazy few seconds as the ball hit the woodwork twice and was kept out by some last ditch defending. The 3rd and 4th goals duly arrived with some beautiful football. Christian found George in the middle of the pitch and his reverse pass sent Matthew through to slot calmly past the keeper. Next Hingl found George who again played in Matthew but this time he drew the keeper and squared back to George to tap in for the final goal.
  vs Solymar
won 6-2
Till (2), George, Alex Hingl, Alex Hurley (2)
A blistering start again saw us cruising 4 goals up by half-time. Firstly Till finished well after George's pass sent him clear. Then the roles were reversed as Barna found Till who juggled the ball before putting George in to volley into the roof of the net. Till provided the pass for Hurley to shoot but the keeper parried well, George followed up but his effort was also saved, but it was a case of third time lucky as Till arrived to smash home under the keeper. Hingl then got in on the act, arriving at the back post to finish from George's perfect cross. It should have been 5 but the referee opted to show lenience as Matthew was upended in the box by the goalkeeper.

Solymar came out fighting for the second half and snatched 2 quick goals. Hingl was robbed in possession and with Jordan out of position the striker made no mistake finishing under Christian. The same player then broke too easily on our right-hand side and squeezed a toe-poked effort inside the near post. Luckily some quality football turned the game again as George slipped Matthew in on the right who calmly rolled the ball across for Hurley to bury in the top corner. George then found Hurley in a similar position and the outcome was the same, this one with the left foot. Some brilliant moments and a good scoreline, but a much scrappier match than the first.
Semi-final vs Esztergom
won 4-2
Alex Hurley (2), Matthew, George
The narrowest win of the day and the most disappointing performance, as one player managed to bully our entire team out of their stride. It began well - Matthew's throw found George, who played in Hurley to finish. Hurley then took Barna's pass from the back and used George's brilliant dummy run to tee-up Matthew, who made no mistake finding the top corner. George shot over after some great football and Matthew went even closer, firing off the inside of the post after dribbling free down the left. A silly push gave away a free-kick at the edge of our box and a poorly-positioned wall and stand-in keeper Till couldn't keep the shot out.

The second half began with an immediate blow as from the kick-off the Esztergom striker was allowed to dribble unchallenged to within 5 metres of our goal before slotting the ball through the crowd of "spectators" and into the far corner for the equaliser. George then had a free-kick saved but from Matthew's resulting corner he managed to bundle the ball over the line to put us back in front. Hurley added a fourth by smashing home a close-range free-kick but the drama wasn't finished as George was adjudged to have blocked a free-kick with his hand and a penalty was awarded. Till, however, came to the rescue with a fantastic save, tipping over the blasted shot and saving some extra pressure in the last minute!
Final vs Solymar
won 4-0
Alex Hurley (2), George, Alex Hingl
A very solid performance to finish the day gave us a well-deserved victory. Five times in the opening minutes the Solymar keeper made excellent saves, but it was a breakaway that eventually broke the deadlock. Christian caught a corner and immediately threw into Hurley's path, who raced away and finished left-footed into the corner. George made it two after cleverly intercepting a pass and volleyed home. By half-time we were completely dominant, but lacked a little bit of cleverness in the final 3rd to add more goals.

The second half was much the same as Hurley, Jordan and George all could have finished better. Hurley scored the third after winning the ball in midfield and again buried his shot left-footed. Hingl made it four with a long-range screamer which flew past the diving goalkeeper. The pressure didn't relent, which showed some good signs of fitness, but no more goals were  scored and the boys finished a very good day having scored 18 goals and conceded just 4 (although that was 4 too many!).
Buda Juniors won the tournament!
